The slit lamp is essentially a simple and generally under-used piece of equipment. It consists of an illumination system and a binocular observation system, which when correctly aligned will result in a coincidental focus of the slit and microscope.

A two-step slit lamp specification generally includes two magnification levels, such as 10x10\text{x}10x and 16x16\text{x}16x or 10x10\text{x}10x and 15x15\text{x}15x. Additional important features often include an adjustable slit width and height, a selection of filters such as cobalt blue and red-free, a movable illumination system, and eyepieces with adjustable diopter correction. Together, these specifications enable practitioners to examine the eye’s anterior and posterior segments with clarity and precision.
